santour (hammered dulcimer) player and singer. His “Two Rivers” sextet includes both Middle Eastern (Arabic lutes
oud, buzuq; percussion) and Western instruments (saxophone, bass, and drumset). The hypnotic and arresting repertoire of the group is focused on joining the melodic and rhythmic structures of the maqam tradition of Iraq with contemporary improvised music.

Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'

I was shocked to learn of the passing of Michael Jackson via a text message from Mark Crino. "Thriller" was my first record, I used to dance on my front porch with a sequined glove and socks and an imitation red leather jacket with the zippers. I remember my parents waking me up to watch the moonwalk on the Motown special on TV. At my wedding reception I played air bass to the Jacksons' "Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground)", and led a conga line to "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'". By the time "Workin' Day and Night" was played, I had enough blisters on my feet to make walking around Naples on our honeymoon painful. Johanna has told me that she hears Michael Jackson's influence on my compositions, specifically after hearing Stanley Maxwell play "The Rusticator" at Sullivan Hall in March 2008.

Me, Marianne, and Mark

This past weekend singer Marianne Meyers (who I met
while studying with Medeski, Martin & Wood last August)
came up to Connecticut from Virginia to work on some
music. We were in the same ensemble at camp, and I
was first drawn to her voice when she was singing the
melody to Billy Martin's "Reliquary". We first collaborated
outside of camp in December in Maryland. This time we
were joined by "Stanley Maxwell" bassist Mark Crino,
playing original tunes, improvisations, and a cover of Al
Green's "Stand Up". We are hoping to work together
again this summer. Special thanks to Yuriy Kordonskiy for providing us a rehearsal space at Wesleyan!

My Namesake Dies at 91
I was named after Andrew Wyeth (my father loved this painting, "Christina's World"). I visited the site it was painted in Cushing, Maine in 2003.

Andrew Wyeth, Realist and Lightning Rod, Dies at 91

The painter's precise, realist views of a harsh rural life became emblems of national culture and incited endless debates about the nature of modern art.

"This particular album by Floyd seemed most adaptable to our sound."
I was interviewed by Bill Clifford of the Hartford Advocate about my band Stanley Maxwell's upcoming performance of Pink Floyd's Animals as both a tribute and benefit on January 10. "I certainly think Roger Waters' lyrics are still relevant - 31 years later - in their critique of capitalism...anyone at our performance of Animals will be able to appreciate the songs on several levels - first and foremost the brilliance of Pink Floyd's musical compositions".

Fishman and "Friends"

I just got home from watching the tour opening show by the
Marco Benevento trio - featuring Reed Mathis and Jon Fishman - in the front row at
Real Art Ways in Hartford. After the show, Fishman sipped some wine while he talked about how great it was playing with the group and getting in shape for the Phish reunion in four months. One of the songs the trio covered was Led Zeppelin's "Friends". Jon Bonham did not play drum set on the album track in 1970 - so Fishman was free to come up with an amazing beat of his own (of course) - in eleven.

"Sophisticated tune(s) with touches of Afrobeat and world rhythms"

"Don't Wake The Baby!", the debut album by my band "Stanley Maxwell", has been reviewed by Bryan Rodgers of the Home Grown Music Network, who had the following to say about some of the tunes I wrote:
"'Defragmenting' is a sophisticated tune that nicely displays the band's soft-handed approach, where less notes and a lighter touch prevail...'Bono's Squandering' and 'Gianormous' exhibit touches of Afrobeat and world rhythms..."

Charlie's "Fine Corinthian Leather"

My band "Stanley Maxwell" opened for the Charlie Hunter Trio at the Main Pub in Manchester, Connecticut last night. I took this picture with Charlie before our set (during which I played on Tony Mason's Slingerland drums). During Charlie's set, Tony called me over as they started into "Fine Corinthian Leather" (from their brand new CD "Baboon Strength", which was released three days earlier) and asked if I had a tambourine. I said yes, so he told me to get it. I ran out to my car in the parking lot, and came back into the club to play on the "four chord jam" with the trio.

Medeski and Milkshakes
The first ever "Camp MMW" exceeded the expectations of everyone who participated! In addition to John Medeski (above), Billy Martin and Chris Wood, special guests included Steven Bernstein, Marc Ribot, and John Scofield. As we took this picture together (after my ensemble worked with Medeski on August 7 in the performance space at the Full Moon Resort), John said "he drinks my milkshake". To view more photos from my week in the Catskills, head on over to my Facebook page.

Dweezil at Dfest

I got the chance to meet Dweezil Zappa backstage on July 27 after his amazing set with "Zappa Plays Zappa" at the 7th Annual Diversafest ("Dfest") Music Conference and Festival in Tulsa, Oklahoma. My band "Stanley Maxwell" had performed a rocking set the night before at The Continental. And yes, that is a "Back To The Future" t-shirt that I am wearing. A Blast From The Past
Hartford Courant Java columnist MaryEllen Fillo wrote the following about me after attending the Hartford Symphony Orchestra's concert with the members of "Classical Mystery Tour" (a Beatles tribute) at the Talcott Mountain Music Festival in Simsbury on July 16:
Symphony (manager of) marketing (and sales) Andy Chatfield, decked out in his "purchased in Las Vegas (at Cirque du Soleil's 'Love')" Beatles hat and T-shirt, was also celebrating music -- his own.
Seems his band
Stanley Maxwell will be one of the featured "emerging bands" at the
DFest in Tulsa, Okla. The alternative music festival next week will also feature the Roots, Disco (Biscuits) and Zappa Plays Zappa.
"I'm a little nervous," said Chatfield about performing at the two-day festival, which is expected to attract about 60,000 people. "And we are going to drive 23 hours to get there." As Chatfield daydreamed about his big music break...
MaryEllen's column also mentioned Hartford Symphony Executive Director Kristen Phillips and David Fay, President and CEO of The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. You can read the full story here .

Early acceptance to study with Medeski, Martin & Wood in August
I have been accepted early to study at the first "Camp MMW" August 5-10, 2008 at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, New York: five days of intensive music workshops and seminars, deep listening, musical exploration, and improvisation. I am greatly looking forward to expanding my approach to music, improving my listening skills, and interacting with the other musicians in a fresh, innovative way.

The March issue of Glastonbury Life features a cover story in the "Neighbors" section, entitled "The Two Lives of Andy Chatfield: Local man promotes symphony by day, jams by night" with interviews by Nancy Thompson and photos by Brian Ambrose.
Thompson spoke with Hartford Symphony Orchestra Music Director Edward Cumming, New York based singer Johanna Kodlick, and fellow members of "Stanley Maxwell" Mark Crino and Evan Green while writing the five page article in January and February.
